Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February and for the sixth anniversary. It is a beautiful stone and it’s purple color comes from trace amounts of iron and aluminum in its crystal structure. Amethyst can be purple, green, purple and yellow crystals, often referred to as Ametrine, or a light purply-pinkish color, sometimes referred to as Rose de France amethyst. It is a member of the quartz family and typically develops in large crystal geodes in rock cavities left by volcanic gas bubbles.
Amethyst is often associated with royalty, due to its color, and has been popular for many centuries. It can be found in the collections of many royals across Europe and Asia, including Catherine the Great of Russia and Wallis, Duchess of Windsor.
It can be found in Russia, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Canada, Zambia, Morocco and even in the United States in Arizona at the Four Peaks mine outside of Phoenix. The most important sources today are in Africa and South America. It ranks a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness and can be cleaned using mild soap and water. Amethysts should not be subjected to heat or to prolonged bright lights.
