December birthstones are all about the blues. From turquoise to tanzanite and blue zircon to blue topaz, December babies have a lot of beautiful birthstones to choose from!
Blue topaz is considered the modern birthstone for December (and the gem of the 4th anniversary) and we LOVE it – in all the color ways! Sky Blue Topaz is a lovely pale aqua blue, Swiss Blue Topaz, which is the intense blue of a clear sky and London Blue Topaz is an inky greenish-blue grey that is elegant and rich and honestly, we love them all.
Our fourth grader is studying Texas history this year and a couple of months ago, he walked into my studio after school and asked me if I knew what the official state gemstone of Texas was. I wish you could have seen his eyes when I answered “blue topaz.” He thought I was SUPER smart that I knew the answer without looking it up. Of course, having made jewelry for 22 years gave me an unfair advantage. I asked him if he wanted to see some real blue topaz and he sure did! We spent thirty minutes talking about the various colors of blue topaz and we even picked some of them out and labeled them and he took them to school to show his classmates, who thought they were really cool. I had so much fun bonding with him over gemstones – what a sweet moment. And did you know that blue topaz is actually found in Texas? Pretty neat!
Blue topaz is also found in Russia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and China. Topaz has a wide range of colors that includes golden brown, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink and purple. Blue topaz is a silicate mineral made up of aluminum and fluorine. While blue topaz registers as an 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, it is rather brittle, so it should be handled with care.
We think blue topaz is a beautiful stone and we have several pieces in the collection that feature the various shades of blue. Scroll down to see them and some fun ways to wear them. We absolutely love mixing and matching them!
